Throwback 2015 – Embitel’s Ecommerce Wins

When the last year ended, our ecommerce team did a quick appraisal and found they covered a lot of ground in 2015.

From making structural changes within the team and projects going live, to new partnerships, Embitel’s ecommerce team was always on their toes! Looking at the projects pipeline, the team is anticipating an even brisker pace in twenty 16.

Amidst all the team meetings, client calls, ecommerce workshops, fun at work activities and birthday celebrations, we managed to catch up with Arun Kumar, Head of Ecommerce (hybris and Magento) at Embitel, to share with us some of the highlights from the year past.

  • Launch of hybris-based RDS for Online Grocery business: Technology enables ecommerce implementation but when the project overruns estimated costs, it severely impacts not only the bottomline but also time-to-market.
  • To safe-guard businesses from such repercussions, our team of Ecommerce Business and Technology Consultants has designed a hybris-based Rapid Deployment Solution (RDS) tailored for the unique needs of the online grocery business.

This RDS facilitates the incremental technology development approach to ensure time and cost savings. It also leverages the omnichannel capabilities of the hybris platform and out-of-box features designed by Embitel to deliver a unified shopping experience for your customers across channels

  • Partnership with Dimension Data for Managed Cloud Services for hybris platfrom: Our collaboration with global IT services provider Dimension Data facilitates the aforementioned RDS.

  • Becoming a Magento 2 Trained Solution Partner: Having successfully implemented several ecommerce projects for global brands across India, the Middle-east, UK and the US, Embitel Technologies has been a preferred solution partner for Magento Ecommerce Implementation and Cloud & Mobility Solutions.
  • And now with Magento 2 certification and hands-on training, my team is all geared-up to deliver the Magento 2 advantage for your business.

I extend my congratulations with great pride to the entire Magento Ecommerce team!

  • Going live on multiple projects: The team saw their hard work come to fruition when several sites and apps they had spent months developing unique features for (Jarir bookstore, eZone app, Sayfix app, among others) went live successfully.
  • I loved the zeal with which they overcame all the challenges and worked as a winning unit!

  • Creation of a dedicated Strategy & Consulting team: In several ecommerce engagements, we provide in-depth Technology as well as Business Consulting to our customers, as part of our requirement gathering workshops. This has served as a great value-add for our customers over years.
  • In order to streamline this service, we now have a dedicated team of Ecommerce Business consultants who focus on helping customers with business strategy and improving operational efficiency.

I’m pleased to say that this move has been well received and even led to better outcomes for our clients.

  • “Clearly, it was a busy year. But we’re excited about 2016 – we look forward to providing end-to-end execution and support for more customers in the Indian subcontinent, extending our scope of implementation to more business sectors like telecom and automobiles, and even developing Magento-based RDS.
  • Cheers to 2016!”

IoT for Home Automation – Custom Gateway, Cloud and Mobile App

Description

Design and development of IoT Home Automation architecture with following components:

  • Sensor networks – installed to capture data from lights, AC, blinds, AV units, doors, and more
  • Custom IoT gateway device – to connect sensor networks to cloud backend
  • Cloud backend – for data analytics
  • iOS/Android App and web-dashboard – UI and front-end to facilitate human and machine interactions

The system demonstrates:

  • Home automation scenario which comprises sensor networks [lights, AC, blinds, AV units] that interact with mobile app [iOS, Android] or web dashboard via the custom IoT gateways and the cloud, using MQTT.
  • The sensor networks convey a wide range of home device information (temperature, humidity, ambient light, human proximity) that is transmitted over various wireless communication protocols like Infrared, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, EnOcean, Zigbee.
  • This information is broadcast to the cloud for data analytics and data in actionable format is displayed on smart handheld devices for the end-users.

This is how the system works:

  • The custom gateways act as a mediator between the sensor networks and the cloud, providing connectivity, security and control.
  • The cloud backend, built using Python and Django, runs applications that analyze data from the sensor networks to collate and relay valuable information that can be used for decision-making.
  • The interface that gives the end users control of the system is accessible through the app on smart devices [Android, iOS] or web dash-board. The UI provides one-touch control of single or group-actions.

System Architecture – An Overview

IoT-system-architecture

Tools and Technology:

  • Sensor networks designed based on ZigBee, EnOcean, Bluetooth and Wifi protocols/technologies
  • Custom gateway hardware and software design to enable compatibility between sensor networks and end-user devices
  • Design, development and integration of cloud-based SaaS. Data analytics that make predictions possible
  • iOS/Android App and a web dashboard that delivers ‘delight’ to end-users through our intuitive UI/UX

Features (snapshot):

  • The system includes multi-action settings for automation of more than one device for an event
Sensors that support automation [door sensor, proximity sensors, beacons, etc.] are used to trigger multiple actions. For example, when the proximity sensor detects that you have crossed the range/perimeter, the AC and lights will be switched off, and the blinds will be opened.

Throwback 2015 – the Successes of Our Automotive Infotainment project

When the MD of your organization mentions your Automotive Infotainment project as one of the highlights of 2015 (blog: Embitel’s 2015 – From Sharad’s Desk), it becomes a matter of pride for the team.

“This kind of acknowledgement for your work is definitely a great source of inspiration and motivation for our entire team,” says Suhas Tanawade, Project Manager – Automotive Infotainment (for a US based Tier-I Supplier).

“We are very proud of our entire Embedded Software team, who made it possible to ship out this one-of-a-kind infotainment software for a unique product. And without doubt, we are one of very few India-based services companies to achieve this,” says JSC Vidyasagar, Program Manager – Infotainment.

Amidst all the excitement surrounding successful execution of the infotainment solution, the team took some time out to talk to us about the milestones achieved in 2015.

Here are some of the key features designed and delivered by the team in the last year:

  • Automatic activation of optional safety cameras when the vehicle is put into reverse or turn signals are on. This was made possible because of 4-camera support designed by the team—an upgrade from the default 2 cameras support provided by Android
  • Commercial vehicle-specific navigation system to provide turn-by-turn instructions
  • Bluetooth connectivity and pairing with Bluetooth-enabled devices. This ensured control of BT Audio Playback and the ability to access Phone Call Controls through steering controls
  • Support for Virtual Gauges over CAN interface
  • Integration of Voice Recognition using the in-built microphones and speakers of the system, thus allowing the user to use Voice Commands to mitigate driver distraction and enhance safety
  • Managing priority among the applications & specific events using the Event Priority module of the system

Embitel’s 2015 – QA Initiatives that Made a Difference

For Nancy Nithya, Embitel’s Quality Assurance manager, 2015 was a year of continuous progress and learnings. As she looks back, she shares her accomplishments during the year and her plans to intensify Embitel’s quality assurance efforts in 2016.

  • Quality Assurance for maintenance projects
    • “For our projects, following correct process is all important for maximum efficiency and to get the desired results. While we have a robust system in place for our development projects, it’s the process for our maintenance projects that we decided to design in the last year. I’m pleased to say it has been implemented, and since then there’s much more clarity between the client and our team, leading to a better outcome and happier customers!
      • Reinforcement of CMMI process guidelines
        • “In the intense pace of things it’s easy to forget the everyday dos and don’ts, so we had several workshops for our project managers and leaders in 2015, reinforcing awareness of the CMMi process areas. With enhanced process management and documentation skills, our teams function better, follow the trusted guidelines and produce better results.”
      • Implementation of Redmine – a flexible project management tool
        • “Managing your time and tasks efficiently is key to smooth functioning and contributes to the quality of output. In the past few months, we have introduced Redmine, a popular tool for project planning. With all the background work in place, most of our colleagues are already using it, and the remaining are on their way to doing so.”
      • Customized processes for our mobility team
        • “Technologies evolve fast and our latest offering, mobility services, was streamlined this year with custom-designed processes to suit the short life cycle of projects typical of the domain.

In the pipeline this year is an upgrade of our ISO 9001 certification to 2015 (it’s currently 2008), and a review of our CMMI level 3 certification.

Besides that, we plan to schedule regular reinforcement our Quality Management Systems and EmbiQ model, a framework that has been bringing us good results so far.”

Retail Technology in 2015: A Look Back at the Trends in Omnichannel Commerce

    omnichannel-retail-ecommerce

With customers interacting with brands across online (app, social media and web-storefront) and offline (stores, kiosks) channels, businesses realized the need to deliver a seamless experience to the customer across touch points – a customer can ‘add-to-cart’ through app, complete payments on website and pick-up product from store.

2015 marked this realization and witnessed new developments that aided the rise of omnichannel retail. Here’s a brief round-up.

Order fulfillment: Being Customer Convenience Centric

In 2015, e-tailers stretched their imagination beyond ‘Free Delivery’. Armed with state-of-the art ecommerce technologies, they got down to the nitty-gritties to give the consumer the convenience of choice.

It’s an urgent order? Opt for same-day delivery.

Nobody will be home to accept the delivery? Choose a suitable time slot.

Want to shop without the hassle of crowded stores, but don’t want to wait for your order to be delivered? Order online, pick up from the store.

There is still more scope for the imaginative and those determined to spoil their customers. American retailer Nordstrom offers curbside (footpath) pickup at several stores. Place your order online, reach a designated parking spot on receipt of an ‘order ready’ notification, accept delivery of your package and you can zip right out!

    Revolutionizing payment

Payment across multiple channels has been a bugbear for retailers, but in 2015 some players found ways to overcome this problem and pave the way for the future.

Omnichannel legend Macy’s made it possible for customers to pay via Paypal, not just online but in stores too, also giving them the benefits of “One Touch” payment.

This allows customers to make a quick purchase through the Paypal app on their phone without having to enter their personal and payment details each time.

In India, Visa launched the “mVisa on Pockets” app, facilitating payment through smartphones at stores.

In a spin off, cosmetics giant Sephora witnessed a growth rate of 8 times in gift card sale revenue after they introduced digital gift cards with omnichannel prepaid capability.

    Online AND offline

When Spencer’s Retail, a renowned Indian grocery outlet brand, acquired MeraGrocer, an ecommerce grocery startup, it was to get a foot in the door to the online grocery retail space. The move was just an example of the direction most large, and even some small, retailers are heading in.

But in the recent past, pure online players have understood the importance of brick-and-mortar outlets too.In recognition of the need to build more brand awareness as well as give people an opportunity to touch and feel their products before purchase, some the ecommerce retailers have opened their own physical outlets. Among the Indian players going down this route are Pepperfry, Lenskart, Makemytrip, and Babyoye.

2016 will be interesting as omnichannel players continue to innovate and egg each other on making modern retail the exciting space it has become today.

    Embitel’s 2015 – From Sharad’s Desk

    Category : Embedded Blog

The concept of a new year is useful. Besides the prime purpose of giving us a reason to celebrate, it also is an opportunity to look back and learn from the year past.

One can learn and unlearn and work towards the year ahead with new vigor.

Here’s a candid throwback to 2015 by our MD Sharad Bairathi on the year that was.

    “I’ll remember 2015 for…

    • An opportunity to support an Indonesian digital commerce services company: The services provider needed additional support for its projects, and it sought Embitel. I can confidently state that our extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of digital commerce implementation, along with well-defined QA processes, meant we delivered nothing but the best for our partner’s client.
    • Completion of our In-vehicle Infotainment project (it’s now in the production stage) for a US based Tier-I Supplier: Cars used to be about getting from one place to another, but connectivity is changing all that and OEMs are orienting themselves to deliver value-add experiences to customers. In 2015, we put ourselves ahead of the game with offerings in Infotainment, Connected Car and Remote Diagnostics services.
    • Our foray into IoT services: Our world is rushing headlong towards all things smart and connected, and application of IoT is delivering value across Automotive, Healthcare, Home and Factory Automation sectors. We’re helping make the world future-ready through our collaboration with OEMs, suppliers and enterprises to make their systems and products IoT enabled.
    • Nothing makes me more proud than watching Embitelians innovate and deliver value-add results: Our engineering teams have developed their own IPs which are helping reduce critical time-to-market for our customers in home automation, industrial automation and automotive domains. At Embitel, we encourage original thinking and implementation of new ideas by our colleagues, so this is their work paying off!
    • Our stellar client profile: Every client at Embitel is priority, but working with some of India’s top retail brands is a great experience.
    • Any kind of external recognition is welcome too, and helps to motivate us all. Being shortlisted to compete in the Cleantech Oil & Gas Challenge 2015, USA, winning the IEI’s Industry Excellence award, value-add interactions with ecosystem partners and customers at various industry events … all in all it was a good year, but we plan to achieve more in 2016.”
