Managed IT Services Success Story – Malabar Gold & Diamonds

Category : Digital Commerce , Others

India’s leading jewelry retailer Malabar Gold & Diamonds developed a relationship of trust with Embitel Technologies after successful launch of their online sales channel ( read entire story here – Magento Implementation & ERP Integration for Increased Online Sales & Order Value). With this confidence in Embitel’s technology expertise and quality of delivery, Malabar’s team extended the partnership by outsourcing their IT infrastructure management and maintenance to our Managed IT Services team.

Embitel has been managing the end-to-end web-store of Malabar for over 3 years now.

Business challenge:

As a renowned and trusted jewelry brand, Malabar anticipated large volumes of traffic and daily transactions on their ecommerce web-store, especially during festive seasons and marketing promotions.

Malabar wanted to focus on delivering best value to their customers through new designs, an exclusive and wide range and innovative offers. They looked at technology as the enabler of all this but sought Embitel’s support to handle all the technical intricacies.

As their Managed IT Services partner, we ensured that Malabar could focus on their retail business, while our team managed their IT infrastructure to prevent any downtime through 24/7 monitoring and real time dynamic troubleshooting.

Embitel’s Managed IT Services for Malabar Gold and Diamonds:

Upon being offered a few architectures to choose from, the client opted for one that needed to be scaled up manually.

Since then, in response to the increasing traffic and Embitel’s input based on analysis, Malabar has switched to Amazon RDS, with autoscaling, which prevents any down time when servers are added/reduced.

To fulfil the goals defined, and to tackle unforeseen situations, Embitel has a running plan that evolves as per the changing requirements. Following are the details of our SLA (service level agreement) with Malabar:

  • 24/7 monitoring and support
  • About 75 parameters have been identified for each server, each with well-defined thresholds. As and when any threshold is breached, Embitel’s monitoring team responds well within the defined reaction time of 15 minutes.

  • Monthly analysis and reporting
  • The maintenance team carries out a trend analysis every month and generates a report with suggestions to upgrade or downgrade servers accordingly. Action, if any, is then taken based on the client’s decision.

  • Regular patch updates for robust security
  • Every month, patch updates are carried out to ensure optimum security.

  • Database backup for business continuity
  • This task is carried out daily to maintain an updated database.

Embitel Impact:

Embitel’s diligent and efficient management has led to optimum server management, ensuring only necessary spends and a healthy RoI.

Malabar Gold has developed two different websites – one for shipping to India, and one to other countries. The Embitel Managed IT Services team is responsible for smooth running of both.

Integration of SAE J1939 stack with an Android Infotainment system | In-vehicle ECU communication

As a trusted embedded technology partner, we at Embitel Technologies have delivered an end-to-end automotive infotainment solution for a Tier-I Supplier.

Now under production, this system will be deployed for commercial vehicles.

Business Challenge:

The infotainment system is loaded with information and entertainment related multimedia features like virtual gauges, navigation maps, voice recognition, access to media files, app-store, phone call/message syncing using BT and more.

Hence this system needs to communicate with several ECUs to fetch various vehicle parameters.

Embitel’s infotainment software development team needed an off-the-shelf communication layer that can be configured easily. This would ensure reduced development time and add value to the bottomline of the project costs.

Embitel Solution: in-house designed reusable J1939 stack with provisions for faster configuration

The team decided to integrate the J1939 stack designed in-house to save time and costs. So our cross-functional expertise in Embedded and Automotive technology added value to our client’s product roadmap.

Following are the details of the solution:

  • Re-usable SAE J1939-compliant stack best suited for commercial vehicles was integrated with the Android OS
  • The ported J1939 stack consisted of J1939 Data Link and Transport Layer (J1939\21), Network Management layer (J1939/81) and Vehicle Application Layer(J1939/71)
  • 50 PGNs were easily configured only in the Application layer, rest of the stack was integrated as it is
  • SAE J1939 compliant Boot Loader was also ported to facilitate eprogramming of ECUs efficiently and securely via CAN network

Integration of J1939 stack with an advanced EPS system | Automotive Tier-I Supplier

The client, a trusted and reputed Automotive Tier-I Supplier of steering and driveline components, approached our Automotive Embedded Services team to resolve a very challenging embedded software development issue.

This hurdle was a grave one-it had the potential to derail the product roadmap of their futuristic Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system.

Here is the complete success story!

Business Challenge:

Our client had successfully embarked on their journey of designing an advanced Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system for Commercial vehicles. The following critical phases of product development lifecycle were already complete:

  • Hardware design based on DsPIC 30F4011 Microchip Platform
  • All the necessary components and hardware modules were identified and finalized as per the design needs
  • In-vehicle testing of the hardware was complete
  • EMI and EMC certification-related compliance was also successfully achieved
  • PCB manufacturing phase was completed

However, the customer encountered a major roadblock during software porting.Due to limited on-chip memory (RAM and ROM) of DsPIC 30F4011 platform, it became imperative for the customer to port highly-optimized embedded software to the EPS system.

Re-designing or changing the hardware platform would have impacted the bottomline of the project negatively, leading to substantial financial loss. Also, the DsPIC Microchip platform was best suited for the required EPS application, meaning that the only feasible resolution was an Optimized Embedded Software.

Embitel Solution: the re-usable and layered architecture based J1939 stack:

After several engineering workshops with the customer for understanding and analyzing the EPS system, Team Embitel was able to overcome the hurdle with the help of following solution:

  • A light-weight and re-usable SAE J1939 compliant stack best suited for commercial vehicles was integrated with the system
  • The entire code was optimized around J1939 stack and since the stack has layered architecture, the optimized software was successfully ported thus overcoming the memory issue

SAE J1939 – Project details:

  • SAE J1939 complaint Boot Loader was also ported to facilitate Reprogramming of ECUs efficiently and securely via CAN network
  • The ported J1939 stack consisted of J1939 Data Link and Transport Layer (J1939\21), Network Management layer (J1939/81), Vehicle Application Layer (J1939/71) and Vehicle Diagnostics Layer (J1939/73)
  • All this ensured support for vehicle communication, reprogramming, diagnostics and fault code memory
  • All the necessary device drivers were designed, developed and ported by Embitel
  • The EPS being an OS-independent system (non-RTOS), a Scheduler was also ported as shown in the system architecture diagram
  • Onsite support for integration of stack with client’s application and in-vehicle testing services were also extended as part of this successful engagement
  • J1939 stack also ensured Enhanced Portability for the steering system (Support for 8, 16 and 32 bit Embedded Controllers)
J1939-Stack
Embitel Impact:
  • Timely resolution of the software issue by designing a highly optimized and high quality code
  • Integration of re-usable J1939 stack not only safe-guarded the client’s product roadmap but also ensured speed-to-market and cost savings

What is SAE J1939?

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1939 is the vehicle bus recommended practice used for communication and diagnostics among vehicle components.

SAE J1939 is used in the commercial vehicle area for communication throughout the vehicle, with the physical layer defined in ISO 11898.

Top 5 Magento extensions for your Ecommerce Web-store

Magento has been the Ecommerce Platform of choice for many successful online businesses, and with good reason. With Magento, a business can build a stable Web-store with vast scope for customization.

This ensures all your unique business needs are implemented and your customers have a convenient shopping experience.

In order to get the most out of this powerful ecommerce platform, it is necessary to know about the behind-the-scenes heroes- the Magento plugins and extensions that make it a smooth experience for the shopper.

Here are 5 must-have extensions for your ecommerce store:

ecommerce-plugin-magento

1) Ajax Layered Navigation:

When a customer visits your Magento powered web-store and encounters a catalogue of thousands of products, he/she is spoilt for choice.

To make sure customers are not overwhelmed and make shopping a pleasant experience, filters are necessary.

Filters can be created for any attribute—price range, colour, material, size, brand etc. But if the products page reloads each time one applies a filter, the web-store will witness mass abandoning of shopping carts.

Ajax Layered Navigation lets the buyer make specifications on all the filters he chooses to use, and when he hits the ‘apply’ button all filters are applied in one go, with just one reload.

Time-saving and efficient!

2) Ajax Shopping Cart:

Even if your webstore has everything else set up perfectly, an unwieldy buying process can make your customer reverse his decision to buy.

The Ajax Shopping Cart offers a simple but very clear way for buyers to add products to their cart.

With this extension a buyer can continue browsing after adding a product to cart without interruption, and the cart widget on a corner of the page reflects the addition.

No need to go back and forth between the cart and the products, and you can still keep track of what’s in the cart.

one-step-checkout

3) One Step Checkout:

You’ve found what you want to purchase, dropped it into the cart and now just need to checkout and pay.

A long process awaits you — sign in or register, fill in your personal details, then the shipping details, choose the payment method and then make the payment.

Or you can use One Step checkout to reduce the number of steps and complete the purchase in just one page, saving on time taken to load the page at every step and encourage swift purchase.

order-management

4) Order Manager:

So far, all extensions have taken care of the needs of the buyer. But it’s equally important to get the backend organized, and Order Manager extension does just that.

In the regular grid view of orders on Magento, the information offered is limited—for the rest one must access the details page.

Order Manager allows customization of the grid to include whichever details you think you need at a glance, and makes the grid editable.

Every time an order progresses, you can also delete the order details right from the grid itself.

ecommerce-advanced-report

5) Advanced Reporting System:

Achieving success in e-tail isn’t a one-time event. Your business needs to continuously innovate and evolve to stay on top of the game.

To enable this, Advanced Reporting System allows you extract and organize data from your store—tracking the success of initiatives, reviewing performance and noting dips and surges-so you can base your decisions on real numbers.

Celebrating Gender Parity this Women’s Day | Stories Worth Sharing

When gender parity was announced as the theme for International Women’s Day this year, we got thinking. The need to call for parity arises because there is discrimination—but then how do we have so many women achievers at Embitel?

Turns out behind every successful woman are two differentiating factors:

  • First, a spouse or family that defies conventional thinking and allows women to dream beyond stereotypes.
  • Second, a workplace that treats men and women at par.

Two of Embitel’s star female employees share how parity is helping them fulfill their dreams.

Swapna Kale, Senior HR Executive, Embitel

“When my husband Sumit got a transfer order to Nagpur, I was disheartened. I had landed my role at Embitel only a few months ago, and I loved my new job! I really didn’t want to leave.

But Sumit didn’t see what the problem was. “If you think being here is important for your career, you stay here,” he said. “I’ll find the earliest possible opportunity to move back to Bangalore.”

It’s been 7 months since, and not once has Sumit made me feel like I alone am expected to follow him wherever his career takes him. I’m proud to say my husband practices true parity!”

Nancy Nithya, Quality Assurance Manager

“My husband, who has extensive experience in quality management, has been the propeller of my journey. He guides me on ways to fast-track my growth, enrolling me for certifications, urging me to set and achieve targets for myself every year. If I’ve reached the position of Manager at such a young age, it’s because of his guidance.

In the meanwhile, my mother cares for our family house in my hometown by herself so that my father can be here with me, and help me look after my home and son.

Man or woman, my family doesn’t differentiate, so gender makes no difference to me either when I set goals for myself.”

12 Design Strategies to develop an ‘In-Vehicle Infotainment’ System

Category : Embedded Blog

Smart phones loaded with apps, since inception, have changed the way we consume information & stay connected with each other.

This need to stay connected & consume information is felt by users even while driving their vehicles.

OEMs’ and Tier-I suppliers responded to this need with ‘In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI)’ system. However, soon it has come to their realization that now the rules of Consumer Electronics/Smart-phone experience also apply to the In-Car experience.

A user demands an intuitive HMI/GUI, a responsive touch-screen, over the air updates and seamless integration of apps (installed on his/her phone) in an IVI system. In addition to this, minimizing driver distraction & ensuring maximum driver safety is a top priority for an OEM or a Supplier.

All this makes designing a winning IVI system an interesting challenge! So, here are the 12 design strategies to develop an IVI system that can help you deliver an experience that your consumers deserve:

  • In an IVI system it is essential to provide surround view to the driver for driving & parking assist, hence support for multiple (upto 4) cameras is a must. Design middleware and application that support switching between multiple cameras and streaming of data from multiple cameras
  • For a super-responsive and an intuitive IVI experience, best practice is to develop a Framework (a library project) which is loaded with all the common functions (API) that can be called by different IVI applications. This makes the entire IVI system very light & highly responsive
  • To suit the vehicle environment & in-car user experience, customize the look and feel of the screens to display most important information to the user such as weather, date & time, traffic alerts, and other alerts from the vehicle at all times. Add voice recognition feature and easy way to activate this feature to minimize driver distraction
  • Customize the Boot Animation & Boot Images as per the logo & branding requirements of the OEM and/or Supplier
  • Depending on the geography of your target Audience, identify the Third Party Apps or deploy apps developed in-house that enhance user experience. For example apps for navigation, finding nearest fuel station, finding nearest service station, emergency contact service, weather, internet streaming of multimedia and more
  • For an intuitive user experience, integrate various sources for multimedia streaming like mass storage devices (USB, CD.), radio sources (AM, FM, WB, XM or DAB), streaming through BT or WiFi, internet streaming and connectivity to Apple devices in a single application
  • An Infotainment system also serves users with critical vehicle data. Develop middleware and applications that provide access to vehicle information available on CAN network to the user in the form of graphical interface as well as text based warnings/alerts
  • An IVI system also plays a significant role in mitigating driver distraction. With the help of Bluetooth communication driver can respond to or make a call, read message, stream music and more. All necessary Bluetooth profiles along with application must be integrated in IVI system
  • To deliver a connected life-style experience the user (and the vehicle/fleet) should be connected to the external world (internet). Include support for connectivity through tethering, Wi-Fi and telematics in the IVI system
  • GPS plays an important role in navigation. Include middleware and applications necessary for navigation and other location based services
  • Develop and build intelligence in the system to act according to different states of the vehicle such as moving, at rest and parking mode
  • Develop and build strategies to help OEMs’ and/or Suppliers with certification and secure installation of the applications in IVI system. This enables individual user or fleet owner(s) to deploy applications of their interests in a safe and secured manner
